At one time, Sony produced very good compact smartphones (Z5 Compact or XZ1 Compact) with flagship features, but this, as you know, is a thing of the past, and Sony’s compacts are now like that. And while we wait for Sony’s latest quarterly report to, among other things, look at the “successes” of the mobile division, a very interesting message came from Japan, indicating Sony’s intention to return to the old strategy in the smartphone market with the release of three flagships: base, Premium and Compact versions.
Recall that Sony’s line of smartphones in the 2020 lineup consists of three models – the flagship Xperia 1 II, the mid-range Xperia 10 II and the state-owned Xperia L4.
Alas, so far there are no details about future models, so it is not known what this comeback will end up with. Perhaps Sony will finally release that long-awaited compact flagship that everyone has been waiting for. But there is another option – another rethinking of a compact smartphone, as happened with last year’s Sony Xperia 5.
In any case, if Sony does end up reviving the Compact line, as Apple revived the iPhone SE earlier this year, it will hardly help the company’s smartphone business, but it certainly won’t hurt.
Now the mobile division is almost the only unprofitable Sony company. But thanks to sustainability and the success of other areas, Sony has no problem covering these losses and does not want to leave the smartphone market so as not to miss a paradigm shift in the industry.
